ah yes the most wonderful time of the year, SPOTIFY WRAPPED TIME!! also sorry this looks so ugly, dreamwidth hates me today for some reason and refuses to let me center text. i have decided that i will just live with it, it's fine bc dreamwidth is objectively the worst site in the world

i spent 33,996 minutes listening this year in total which i think is the standard for me? i believe all the other years have been around 30k as well

top songs:
1. 月の丘 // Ichiko Aoba
2. Lilac // IU
3. Lost in Paradise // ALI
4. Film Out // BTS
5. Posing for Cars // Japanese Breakfast

i pretty much saw this coming, i've listened to these songs nonstop the entire year. the only one that's vaguely surprising is posing for cars because i only started listening to that album this autumn, so i hadn't realized how much i've actually listened to that song BUT it's like one of my favourite songs of all time so it really isn't that surprising after all ^_^ also i honestly believe lip would've been higher than lilac if it wasn't for the fact that it was taken off of spotify for a few months LMAO

i wanted to compare my top songs this year with previous years to get an overview of my spotify Music Journey so i went back to my oldest spotify wrapped (2017) and then i promptly regretted it. so much hamilton. but anyways here's my most played songs from each year from when i started using spotify:

2016: Cry Baby // Melanie Martinez
2017: Alexander Hamilton from Hamilton
2018: The Truth Untold // BTS
2019: Sunflower // Post Malone & Swae Lee
2020: Dynamite // BTS

(also qualified guesses for top music pre-2016 is like... idk various taylor swift songs i guess lol. probably glee music, regrettably </3)

cwy baby.... that's how you know it's 2016 lol. I had a  melanie phase in my first year of high school, I listened to her music constantly. I didn't have spotify for most of it though, I used ITUBE lol. what a lifesaver. i had a samsung and you couldn't even get itube on the google play store, you had to use the samsung app store. but yeah, 2015-2016 was my IndieKid [trademark] music phase, and i shifted over to spotify somewhere in 2016. i'm scrolling through my top 100 playlist and it's pretty much just melanie martinez, 21 pilots, fall out boy, halsey and the aforementioned GLEE MUSIC. thank god and jesus that 2016 is far behind me !! (also re: cringe music, i dont actually think any music is cringy, we like what we like, but when i'm talking about my own music preferences i have permission to think it's cringe, it's only embarassing when *i* used to listen to x artist)

there's also quite a lot of Classics here, as in queen, wham, the beatles etc etc, and i'm now remembering that i started listening to boomer music bc i was writing my first big high school paper in this year, and i sat in the same classroom as my friends. we wrote together, and two of them just kept playing 80s music and then it just stuck with me

2017 was my musical theater phase, scrolling through my top 100 i'm seeing a lot of hamilton, dear evan hansen and team starkid lol. this was also the year i started listening to kpop, so there's also a handful of BTS and then a few rly wellknown songs like boombayah, bang bang bang, monster etc etc. also discovered regina spektor this year and she's still one of my faves!!

2018 is almost solely kpop LMAO, seeing lots of bts, akmu, rv, iu, dean. ig this was the year where i established my faves and found the kpop niche i enjoy? also africa by toto is my 100th song which i think is funny. one of my close friends from highschool (one of the aforementioned 80s music enjoyers) just loved that song, so much so that it made it onto my top 100

2019 was SPIDERVERSE YEAR hence the post malone song lol. there's also a ton of vietnamese music in my top 100 bc i got over my internalized ethnic and cultural selfhatred lolol. there was still a lot of kpop but i'm also seeing mamerico, yeye, the Reappearance of regina spektor, joji, declan mckenna so hmm i think i moved back to some indie music and folk music! also important note, this was the year the otgw soundtrack finally was uploaded to spotify so there's a ton of songs from the soundtrack on my top100 and they appear in every playlist from 2019 and onwards bc i listen to the soundtrack obsessively every autumn to this day

dynamite being my most listened to song in 2020 is so funny to me because it's only due to me listening to it like 50 times on the day it came out... i desperately needed the serotonin T-T anyway, lots of txt (got into txt that year!!), tswift folklore, jacob collier, rina sawayama, declan, indigo la end, poppy and yk other ppl i still listen to this year. there's not as much viet music as the year before bc i didn't get to go back to vietnam for obvious reasons, and my cousins are the ppl keeping me updated on the viet pop music scene, but i'd managed to maintain a few, which i'm p happy about. p good playlist imo!!

okay anyways, i should probably go over my 2021 playlist too since i've summarized the others so the most recurring artists/albums are tswift evermore, clairo sling, kpop that featured in gp999 lol. also started listening to perfume genius, the marías, audrey nuna, phoebe bridgers and the oh hellos which are all great. there isn't a single viet song which is a little regrettable but i HAVE listened to some and enjoyed quite a lot which is what's most important! and most importantly plastic love was put on spotify after 5274 years so it's making it's first appearance in my spotify wrapped out of many future appearances !! FINALLY

 genres:
1. kpop
2. indie pop
3. dancepop
4. art pop
5. japanese folk

this checks out i guess. i purposefully only listen to lofi on youtube so i dont screw up the stats fdfhd if not lofi would've been in my top 5 for sure. i spend an awful lot of time studying </3 i also listen to things that aren't pop lol but not enough for it to reach top five. but if i were to give guess at non-pop i'd say alt rock, rnb and escape room.... whatever that is?? i know i listen to it a lot but i still dont get what it is

artists:
1. Ichiko Aoba
2. Taylor Swift
3. dodie
4. Mitski
5. IU

first time since 2017 where BTS left my top five :0 not surprised about ichiko, dodie or iu, a little surprised about tswift and mitski? i really didn't think i'd listened that much to them but APPARENTLY i rly REALLY enjoy sad music. i'm also surprised about the fact that clairo isn't there bc i've listened to sling so many times, like i'd say it's my favourite album from this year?? maybe she's sixth or seventh

personal favourite albums of 2021
1. Sling // Clairo
2. Jubilee // Japanese Breakfast
3. Build a Problem // dodie
4. The King // Sarah Kinsley
5. Lilac // IU

this is pretty tentative? hmmmm. but yeah that's how it looks for now.

predictions for next year's wrapped: new mitski, otgw soundtrack (as always), spiderverse 2 soundtrack, new dean (not guaranteed, this is just me trying to manifest it). i'll probably also stick with some iu, bts and ichiko tracks that i tend to revisit a lot!! but generally i'm just hoping to discover lots of new cool music ^_^

ahh i really appreciate these, thanks!! i've had jubilee on my radar since it came out but i regrettably still have yet to get around to it, so these recs are definitely useful. and i appreciate the iu recs even more considering how expansive her discography is - i'm familiar with a couple of songs from last fantasy and lilac, but otherwise i know little about her or her music, which i need to change (and i definitely need to check out that ichiko reminiscent song asap!!!)
